Politicised Sexualities, Marginalised Histories
A Conference on Sexuality in Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA)
📅 Conference Date: March 25, 2017
📍 Location: Khalili Lecture Theatre, SOAS University of London
Organised by: CTDC & Centre for Gender Studies, SOAS
The Centre for Transnational Development and Collaboration (CTDC), in partnership with the Centre for Gender Studies at SOAS University of London, invites abstract submissions for its second annual conference.
This one-day event will critically explore sexual rights discourse in the SWANA region and the Global South, focusing on how histories, identities, and political movements are shaped and contested through sexuality.
🎯 Focus Areas
“This conference aims to reframe dominant narratives of sexual identity, challenge the erasure of marginalised histories, and foreground intersectional voices across the region and beyond.”
Topics may include, but are not limited to:
• Sexual identity politics in transnational and diasporic contexts
• The erasure, distortion, or reclamation of marginalised sexual histories
• The migration-as-‘safe haven’ narrative for LGBTQI individuals from SWANA
• Intersectionality in experiences of gender and sexuality under global inequality
• Critical approaches to dominant LGBTQI frameworks from a SWANA perspective
📌 Submission Guidelines
• Abstracts should be no more than 300 words
• Include a short biography (max. 100 words)
• Send submissions to: [email protected]
• Deadline: January 29, 2017
Submissions from activists, researchers, practitioners, and members of marginalised communities are especially encouraged.
