Accountability usually fails as a routing problem

Accountability to affected populations, complaints and feedback, transparency, and what an organisation owes the people its work affects.

Accountability

Why this is hard.

When we assess accountability, the values are rarely the issue. The failure is almost always structural: a complaint arrives and nobody is certain where it goes. A feedback mechanism collects responses that no decision-making process is obliged to read. A commitment to affected populations exists in a strategy and nowhere in an operating procedure.

Accountability becomes real when it is clear: when there is a defined path from what someone says to a decision someone has to make, with a timescale attached and a person responsible at each step.

We also work on accountability in its harder form: what an organisation does once something has gone wrong publicly, and what it owes the people affected.

Facilitation & Conflict Work Facilitated processes with affected communities or partners; repair after harm
Advisory & Accompaniment Support through implementation and through public accountability processes
What we get asked

Questions organisations bring us.

  • "We collect feedback. I could not tell you what it has changed."
  • "Something has become public and we do not know how to respond responsibly."
  • "What does accountability to affected populations actually require us to do?"
  • "Our partners are accountable to us. Who are we accountable to?"
In practice

Selected work.

Connecting accountability, preparedness and duty of care

an AAP framework and preparedness framework developed and aligned with existing safeguarding and duty of care policies into a coordinated system.

Independent accountability assessment during a public crisis

an assessment of governance, decision-making, response mechanisms, partnerships and public communications. The organisation adopted the recommendations, restructured, published a response and continued its work. The case also contributed to wider sector discussion about organisational systems and responsible public response.
